Agile Project Manager

We are establishing teams to deliver our strategic platform which serves all our clients. The platform is going through a significant stage of innovation and new product development and we are using Lean and Agile principles to make it happen.

As an Agile Project Manager, you will be a servant leader to one or more agile teams, typically to deliver a specific product or transformation via a multi-disciplinary, highly skilled delivery team.

Delivery and the backlog

You'll be working collaboratively with stakeholders to facilitate and positively influence solution development, facilitating transparent and inclusive communication and collaboration among the team and the diverse range of SMEs we have in the business.

A customer centric approach is key. Encouraging the team to work collaboratively and develop solutions focused on the customers. Our delivery teams are intentionally located in London and close to our customers, to facilitate fast feedback and frequent iterations of product research and experiments.

Our Product team understand what is of value to the business stakeholders and customers, and you'll be working to ensure that the team is focused on these highest priorities.

User stories are the heart of the delivery backlog, and you'll be working closely with Product and delivery teams to ensure their timely creation and elaboration.

Standups, estimation sessions, backlog grooming and prioritisation, showcases and retrospectives are part of our business as usual, and while the teams are good at contributing and know what must be done, they'll need you to make sure the sessions happen, get them scheduled in, and do the facilitation where needed.

We operate in a fast-moving competitive industry and are constantly innovating and reacting to changes in the market. We expect and welcome changing requirements, and it's important that you communicate how these scope changes affect the size and complexity of your team's backlog and delivery timescales to enable timely decisions to be made.

You will be shielding the team from external distractions and interferences, so they can get on with delivery and building software.

Where blockers emerge to impact the delivery team’s progress, you'll be actively working to remove them and mitigate their impact on the team's productivity and setting expectations about blockers' impact on delivery.

Achieving all the above will enable you to oversee and co-ordinate planning activities, often at a high level and to get into the detail of the project to realise the vision.

Progress and transparency

As Agile Project Manager you will make sure the project vital signs, metrics, progress and information radiators are up to date, meaningful, relevant and visible.

You will ensure tracking tools are up-to-date, collating the information and status details to prepare status reports and visualisations of progress.

Maintaining high visibility information radiators such as the team wall, backlog, risks and issues and communications of progress is a job for the whole team, and your part in this is to ensure that everything is up-to-date and presents a clear picture of what is happening on the ground.

Availability of team members and team velocity must be tracked and will be part of the role.

As a servant leader for the team, you will use and encourage open, honest, and courageous communications with the ability to adapt the communication approach to different audiences/situations.

While we're all about in-person collaboration and face-to-face communications where possible, you will need strong written and verbal presentation skills to apply to all communications.

Team working

Establishing rapport, trust and encouraging diversity of thought and new ways of doing things within the team will be an important part of your role.

You will continually monitor the team's health and facilitate activities to build the team's Agile capability, the ability to self-organise and to continuously improve.

You will be a confident facilitator, experienced in running workshop sessions for the team or wider business.

Coaching delivery team members and business stakeholders to understand Agile values, principles and practices

Other important stuff

You need to be looking ahead, able to spot warning signs, to foresee and remove blockers before they become problematic

You will need the ability to challenge existing processes, collaborating and influencing people outside the team if processes are slowing the team down or not adding value

You’ll be monitoring project spend, highlighting potential variance based on forecasts and actual spend

You’ll support the Delivery and Product team by building and maintaining strong stakeholder relationships

Actively participate in the Delivery community, sharing and re-applying skills and knowledge and bringing in best practice.

Essential skills and experience:

  • You are emotionally mature, self-aware, supportive. You have good listening skills, empathy, optimism, resilience. You are not defensive, directive, or judgmental

  • You are comfortable with uncertainty and ambiguity, and you know how to deal with situations effectively.

  • Able to demonstrate experience of successfully delivering different projects, using lean-agile approaches, in large business environments

  • Practical experience of SDLCs and project delivery models including Agile, Waterfall and iterative/RAD approaches

  • Ability to work closely and harmoniously with both business and IT

  • Great communication skills

  • Flexibility in using a range of influencing styles to build strong sustainable relationships

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience with Lean/Agile delivery

  • Agile Project governance certification (PMI-ACP, CSM, CSP, PSM I/II/III, etc.) or equivalent demonstrable experience
