Sr. Software Engineer (Security / Systems Administrator)

Job Summary

This position provides effective system and security engineering for LexisNexis products and systems.This is a hands-on application engineer who can work on various technology stacks, multiple systems and with many programming languages.

The candidate will collaborate with engineering teams and information security teams to design and implement software solutions that align with LexisNexis’s business goals and technology strategy.

The candidate will be responsible for system engineering, configurations, installations, troubleshooting and information security. The candidate must be able to manage multiple projects, technologies and enjoy working on multiple platforms and components.

Experience (US only) and Education

  • 5+ years of experience in software or systems engineering

  • Experience in Information Security

  • BS Engineering/Computer Science or equivalent experience required; advanced degree preferred

Key Responsibilities

  • Diagnose system performance problems using available standard performance tools and system indicators such as queue lengths, CPU utilization, etc.

  • Recommend and change system parameters or configuration variables to improve overall system performance.

  • Demonstrate thorough understanding of all system components and of program products assigned to support.

  • Work closely with development groups, support groups, and vendors to coordinate special operations, and communicate/escalate problems as appropriate to meet assigned deadlines.

  • Demonstrate thorough understanding of major system components in completing assigned tasks (i. e., storage systems, Linux kernel, UNIX kernel, UNIX file system, and Windows infrastructure).

  • Hands-on experience working with development teams, influencing secure coding practices and actively involved with code reviews

  • Hands-on experience performing application static security and penetration assessment with tools such as ( AppScan, Fortify , Burp, OWASP ZAP Proxy, WebInspect, Fortify, Veracode, Nessus etc.)

  • Hands-on experience in performing application penetration and security functional testing

  • Hands-on experience in conducting a web/mobile assessments

  • Design reviews, pen tests, code reviews, security checks, Planning, Execution and Reporting

  • Knowledge of OWASP Top 10/ SANS Top 25, identify vulnerabilities via manual and automated testing methods and how to effectively remediate vulnerabilities associated with each

  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills, self-motivated; outstanding oral and written communication skills

  • Knowledge of security bug classification frameworks such as CVSS and DREAD, and experience applying security bug classification methods in development and QA.

  • Experience with vulnerability research, like fuzzing, malware analysis and exploits writing.

  • Experience in Risk and threat modeling, pen testing and vulnerability assessments

  • Review existing systems to identify issues, bottlenecks and risks. Create technical plans to mitigate these issues.

  • Problem-resolution identifying, researching, and coordinating the resources necessary to effectively troubleshoot/diagnose complex project issues.

  • Evaluate new technologies and their applicability to the business.

  • Industry/technology advancements and continually build alliances to explore ways to leverage and advance our technical opportunities.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of programming languages, code, web applications, web servers and databases.

  • Experience with open source programming; LAMP Stack Preferred

  • Experience with system engineering

  • Knowledge in multiple programming language(s); e.g., PHP, Java, Perl, Python, C++ or expert level in engineering discipline.

  • Multiple years’ experience with different programming languages

  • Experience with high volume web applications and distributed systems

  • Strong understanding of web services, security and performance

  • Strong understanding of secure coding and OWASP standards

  • Experience with AWS, Openstack, Ansible

  • Ability to work in fast-paced environment and maintain a positive attitude

  • Excellent designing, programming, code debugging, testing and troubleshooting skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment, prioritize multiple tasks, and problem solve under pressure of deadlines and resource constraints.

  • Strong organization/project planning, time management, and change management skills across multiple functional groups and departments, and strong delegation skills involving prioritizing and reprioritizing projects and managing projects of various size and complexity.

  • Advanced problem-solving experience involving leading teams in identifying, researching, and coordinating the resources necessary to effectively troubleshoot/diagnose complex project issues; prior success extracting/translating findings into alternatives/solutions; and identifying risks/impacts and schedule adjustments to facilitate management decision-making.

  • Advanced communication (verbal and written) and customer service skills. Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills applicable to a wide audience including senior and executive management, customers, etc., including diction/terminology and presenting information in a concise and effective manner to clients, management, and various departments using assorted communication mediums.

  • Strong research skills.
